Skin Care Quiz

Tips to Identifying your Skin Type

Unless you know what kind of complexion you have, constructing an effective skincare regime for yourself is nearly impossible. Choosing the wrong products can have fairly catastrophic results: if you’re in possession of an oily t-zone, for example, you absolutely don’t want to be slathering on the thick, oil based moisturizers designed to treat very dry conditions. To help you to determine what kind of complexion you have, we’ve complied a simple test to guide you with making the right product choices for your Skin Type.

Skin Care Quiz

After you wash your face, wait 15–20 minutes. What is your skin like then?
The pores on your face are ________.
I would describe the condition of my skin as __________.

You answered mainly "a", you have normal or combination skin.

NORMAL SKIN

This type of skin has a clear, fine-textured, supple and smooth surface, neither greasy nor dry. It glows with an inner health, which stems from good blood circulation and excellent health.

It is beautiful, but it needs care if it is to last. Neglect can lead to signs of aging and wrinkling.

Skin Care for Normal Skin

Wash: Simple consistent routine will keep your skin looking great. Try our Vitamin E & Carrot Soap to tone and tighten mature skin or Femme Makeup Remover /Cleanser for a more moisturizing clean.

Deep cleanse: Once a month, use our Facial Clay Mask. Mix up the recipe depending on what results you want.

Exfoliate: Once a week, using our Femme Body Scrub (yes, on your face too!)

Moisturize: Always use a moisturizer under makeup to help retain surface moisture. Change your regime by adding Serum under your Day Cream.

At night, to keep your skin's normal moisture balance apply an oil-based night cream like our Femme Multi Cream. This will replenish what was lost during your busy day.

  • Any time your skin becomes slightly oily or slightly dry in any area, correct these tendencies by following the advice given regarding these types of skin.
  • Avoid direct heat on the face - including blow dryers.
  • Guard against the drying, aging effects of the sun by minimizing your exposure to the sun.

It is important to remember that the skin is a great indicator of one’s inner health. When you see signs that your skin needs more care, you must also look for any serious underlying problem that may have given rise to your skin problem. Consult a dermatologist and get a professional opinion.

You answered mainly "c", you have oily skin.

OILY/COMBINATION SKIN

If you have combination skin, you will have oily areas generally around your t-zone (your nose and forehead).

Combination skin has patches of both dry and oily skin, and it requires different types of care in relation to particular facial areas.

Dry zones, which are usually located on the cheeks and around the eyes, should be treated with rich creams and moisturizers, while oily areas, will benefit from frequent and thorough cleaning.

If severe acne is associated with this skin type, we always recommend you consult your doctor for treatment advice as it can be related to an underlying issue.

How to Care for Oily/Combination Skin

Wash: Oily Skin needs special cleansing with plenty of hot water and Oily Skin Soap to prevent the pores from being clogged. For combination skin, lukewarm water is preferable. Avoid harsh products that strip your skin of oil and encourage flakiness. They can cause your oil glands to work overtime to compensate for the loss of natural oils.

Deep cleanse: Try using our Clay Mask. You can simply mix the mask with water, or add any of the following: a little lemon or lime juice, some pureed cucumber, or a touch of honey to create a more customized approach.

Exfoliate: Exfoliate Soap on alternate nights, and by following the treatment with a light coating of moisturizing Day Cream.

Treat: Opt for an oil-free moisturizer like Crème Bouton to maintain a shine-free complexion. With its anti-bacterial properties, this product can be used as an all-over face cream or a blemish treatment.  To treat dry patches due to combination skin, try any of our Creams and Lotions based on the severity of the dry areas.

Cosmetic ingredients, especially fragrance, are often triggers that irritate oily/combination skin.

You answered mainly "d", you have sensitive skin.

SENSITIVE SKIN

Sensitive skin is a very common problem. Some of our clients come to us asking if we have products specifically formulated for this skin type. What we often find, is once they eliminate products with fragrance, harsh chemicals and irritants, their skin becomes less irritated. This is why all-natural products are best.

How to Care for Sensitive Skin:

Wash: Hot water and over-washing are ways in which skin can become damaged. Choose a gentle, simple Unscented Soap or Castille Soap for allergy prone skin. For dry skin sensitivities, try the Dry Skin Soap.

Soothe & Protect: Winter is a tough time for those with dry and sensitive skin as the low temperature and humidity damages the skin's barrier. Choose a moisturizer rich in natural ingredients like Derma Cream or Derma Latte. Olivier’s Dry Skin products can also be recommended.

Cosmetic ingredients are often triggers that irritate sensitive skin. Choose products that are designed for those with Sensitive SkinAvoid fragrances.

If you answered Mostly “b” this indicates you may have Dry Skin

DRY SKIN: How to Care for Dry Skin

Wash: Dry skin needs plenty of thorough but gentle cleansing, regular stimulation with massage and generous quantities of oil and moisture.  Try Olivier’s hand-made, all natural Dry Skin Soap.

Deep Cleanse: 2-3 times a month, add olive oil or yogurt to our Facial Mask to clarify the skin and remove dull, dry surface skin cells.

Exfoliate: Try our Femme Body Scrub to remove the dead skin, leaving way for your healthy skin and natural production of oils. Be careful not to overdue the exfoliating, and use extra caution if you suffer from symptoms of Eczema or Psoriasis.

 Moisturize the right way

With dry skin you need a moisturizer that prevents skin’s loss of moisture, and that shields it from the environment. The best approach to managing dry skin is to avoid using commercial creams and lotions that contain mineral oils and other petroleum products. Instead, our solutions are based on natural ingredients targeted to help symptoms of Dry Skin. Try like Olivier’s Dry Skin Lotion or our Dry Skin Cream.

Treat: For extreme dry skin problem areas, try our Dry Skin Oil, a penetrating, moisturizing treatment to relieve deep redness, itch and discomfort.

Milk Bath

Once a week take a Milk Bath. It will nourish and soothe your skin. At the same time, the added essential oil of Ylang Ylang can improve your blood circulation.

Synthetic ingredients in cosmetics, especially fragrance, are often triggers that irritate dry and sensitive skin, as are extreme temperatures.

If you don't have a good, strong moisturizer for your face on a cold, windy winter day, don't go out! Cold will cause any moisture on your skin to evaporate. The wind will just accelerate the process. Add our Lip Balm to keep your pucker soft.
